Interviews

LAST BREATH

Our first interview with the band from other continent. Last Breath was founded in 1988, but unfortunately their creativity wasn't very successeful. About the 'war path' of Quebec group read in this interview. My quastions answered Patrice Moore - guitarist and the founder.

Scorpio: Hello, Pat! Let's begin!

Pat Moore.: Hello.

S: Pat, band is not young. It was foundedin 1988, but have recorded only three releases during this time. How canyou explain so little number of albums?

P. M.: One single word: MONEY! Seriously, wesent demos to numerous record companies, but it seemed like it was alwaysbad timing or not the kind of Metal that the label was into. Also, when weput out 'Ashes To Ashes' in 1994, the scene and the crowd was ravenous forDeath Metal so it didn't help. We should have put something out in 1997,but money was a big issue.

S: When are you going to record your newalbum?

Dimension O.D. P. M.: Actually, we recorded a few songs here andthere, but nothing that met our standards. 'Dimension O.D.' is ready to bere-edited with a bonus track, but we cannot self-finance it now. Rightnow, we have enough material to do almost two albums to record this stuffwe are working on a home studio project. When it will be all set up,things should move faster. I can't talk about a date now, but there willbe something new in the near future.

S: Are you going to do some changes inyour music? To add some elements from other metal styles, maybe?

P. M.: I think we do it unconsciously, butit remains LAST BREATH's sound. We already added some violins and femalevoices on the demo 'Bleed For Me'. We have many new ideas shaping up.

S: Do you take part in other projects?

P. M.: No. Except maybe for fun...

S: There are many people, which don'tknow about 'LAST BREATH'. Can you introduce the band? How can youcharachterize music, you play?

P. M.: I think our sound is quite raw andpure. A few classical parts, but most of the time it's very fast, aggressive and melodic. The newer stuff tends to be a bit louder, deeperand heavier in general. From what I see at our gigs, it easily creates agood thrash pit during the whole show.

S: What collectives you think haveinfluenced at 'LAST BREATH'?

P. M.: Metallica, Maiden, Slayer, Obliveon, some Death and Power Metal influences. Even a touch of Black Metal thesedays. Thrash remains the main influence.

S: What are the main themes of yourlyrics?

Ahes To Ahes P. M.: All 'Ashes To Ashes' revolves around differentfaces of death and the end of our world. It includes a trilogy about anecrophalic and his love story with a dead woman. Before that in'Dimension O.D.', it was a concept story of a schizophrenic girl. We havenewer songs like 'God is Dead', which speaks by itself, 'Tamerlan', agreat blood-thirsty conquerer. 'Vita Detestablis', partly in Latin, thedarker side of life, 'Chasse-Galerie', a folk song. 'Bleed For Me', thethoughts of serial killer. There are more and somehow it's always relatedso death.

S: 'LAST BREATH' is quite popular inMontreal. How often do you give concerts in Quebec, in Canada?

P. M.: Back in the mid 90's up to 1997,about 12 a year. Then it went down to 3 to 5 until now due to the factthat nothing new came out. More than 75 gigs so far.

S: Have you ever taken part in gigs inother countries (I mean, except Canada)?

P. M.: We never played outside Quebec. However, we played in about three dozens of different towns and cities. Many times in Montreal, where we live since 1991. Of course we would loveto tour anywhere else. We have good contacts in Germany and Switzerland, but money again is an issue here. We personnaly know members of Cryptopsyand we would love to follow their footsteps in Japan. We will see what thefuture reserves for 'LAST BREATH'.

S: What Canadian bands can youdistinguish?

P. M.: We have enjoyed Obliveon since 1989,Gorguts was great too. We like Voi Vod, Anonymus, Cryptopsy and there is alot of talented younger bands that are worth discovering such as Unexpector Blinded by Faith...

S: What music do you like?

P. M.: I love Power Metal, I have been a fanof Helloween for almost two decades, I like Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian. Ibelieve Swedish Metal is great too: Therion, In Flames, Dark Tranquility,Entombed. I like Rhapsody, Hammerfall Samael. I always love old Metallica,Slayer, Overkill, Megadeth, Haggard, Death, Pantera, Testament, Carcass,Coroner, Kreator, King Diamond, Sanctuary, Nevermore, Stratovarius, Rage.I am a big Heavy Metal fan too, I was quite influenced by the Heavy andSpeed wave in the 80's. I also enjoy some Death and Black Metal bands likeMorbid Angel, Children Of Bodom, Old Man's Child, Dimmu Borgir,Vintersorg, Opeth, Arch Enemy. The list goes on, I also enjoy classicalmusic and some other stuff, but 98% of the time it's METAL!

S: Montreal is famous through an icehockey club 'Canadiens'. Do you visit their matches often?

P. M.: I would say in average once a year, but I am not a fan of our home team, I think they suck! Their organisationstinks! I like Baseball too every once in a while, although our team, TheExpos, never won a championship.

S: Message to your fans:

P. M.: LONG LIVE HEAVY METAL!

S: I hope to see much more releases of'LAST BREATH'. Good Luck!

P. M.: Thanx and please be patient and youshould not be disapointed.
