Norwegian drummer Jan Axel Blomberg, universally known as Hellhammer, was born on August 2nd, 1969. He joined MAYHEM in 1988 and is the only musician to appear on every studio album the band has released, from the notorious "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" through to their most recent work. His playing survived the events that made MAYHEM infamous — the death of vocalist Dead in 1991 and the murder of guitarist Euronymous in 1993 — and he reassembled the band in 1994 to finish and issue the album that defined Norwegian black metal's sound and mythology. In 1987 he also co-founded ARCTURUS, whose avant-garde records showed a completely different side of his musicianship. Blomberg has since drummed for dozens of acts including ARCTURUS, THE KOVENANT and SHINING, and is widely regarded as one of extreme metal's most technically formidable drummers.
