On May 25, 1993, ANTHRAX released "Sound of White Noise," their sixth studio album and the first to feature vocalist John Bush, who replaced Joey Belladonna. Bush's grittier, more aggressive vocal approach transformed ANTHRAX's sound from the thrash-meets-fun style of the Belladonna era into something heavier and darker. Produced by Dave Jerden, the album incorporated grunge and alternative influences without abandoning the thrash metal foundation that Scott Ian and Charlie Benante had built. The single "Only" became a massive hit, receiving heavy rotation on MTV and rock radio, and remains one of ANTHRAX's most popular songs. "Black Lodge" and "Potters Field" showcased the band's heavier new direction, while the album debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200, their highest chart position ever. "Sound of White Noise" proved that ANTHRAX could reinvent themselves while maintaining their identity as one of thrash metal's Big Four, adapting to the 1990s without losing their edge.
