THE GATHERING is a Dutch metal band from Oss, formed in 1989. Beginning as a death/doom metal act, they underwent a remarkable transformation in the mid-1990s with the arrival of vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen, pivoting to atmospheric rock and trip-hop influenced soundscapes. Their albums "Mandylion" and "Nighttime Birds" are considered landmark releases in the evolution of female-fronted atmospheric music.
