The career-spanning documentary "Megadeth: Behind the Mask" premiered in over 1,000 theaters worldwide yesterday, timed precisely one day before the band's final album release. Directed by Casey Tebo, the 108-minute film offers an unflinching look at four decades of one of thrash metal's most turbulent and creative forces.

The documentary features Dave Mustaine's detailed track-by-track commentary on the new self-titled album, interwoven with a 40-year retrospective that covers the band's formation in Los Angeles in 1983, Mustaine's now-legendary dismissal from METALLICA — which he has called the defining trauma that fueled his entire career — his battles with addiction that nearly destroyed the band multiple times, his 2019 throat cancer diagnosis and recovery, and the creative fire that drove 17 studio albums across four decades.

Intimate interviews with current and former band members, producers, and contemporaries from the thrash scene provide multiple perspectives on MEGADETH's legacy. Archival footage, much of it previously unseen, traces the band's journey from the underground speed metal circuit to arena headliners and multi-platinum success. The film also captures the recording sessions for the final album, offering viewers a window into the creative process.

Initial audience reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with many calling it the definitive MEGADETH story and a fitting companion piece to the farewell album. Encore screenings have been added in select markets due to demand. The documentary will receive a streaming release in the coming months, but Mustaine has encouraged fans to experience it in theaters first.
