The City of La Vergne, Tennessee has officially proclaimed January 17, 2026 as "Megadeth Day," an extraordinary civic honor for one of thrash metal's most iconic and influential bands. Mayor Jason Cole presented the proclamation to the band at La Vergne City Hall on Friday, January 16, recognizing MEGADETH's visit for "Let There Be Shred: The Ultimate Megadeth Immersive Listening Event" — a one-day celebration at the very studios where the band's self-titled final album was recorded.

The proclamation represents a rare intersection of local government and extreme music, highlighting the cultural impact that MEGADETH have had over more than four decades. Dave Mustaine, who relocated to Tennessee in recent years, has become a part of the La Vergne community, and the city's recognition reflects both the band's global significance and Mustaine's local presence.

The "Let There Be Shred" event itself offers fans an in-depth celebration of the music, stories, and legacy of MEGADETH. Held at the studio where the farewell album was recorded with producer Chris Rakestraw, the experience includes an exclusive full album playback, behind-the-scenes content, meet-and-greet opportunities with band members, and displays of memorabilia spanning the band's entire career from 1983's formation in Los Angeles to the present.

The self-titled final album, MEGADETH's seventeenth studio record, drops January 23 and features ten tracks — including a bonus cover of METALLICA's "Ride the Lightning," a song that Mustaine co-wrote before his famously acrimonious departure from the band in 1983. The inclusion of the track adds a poignant layer of full-circle closure to what is confirmed as MEGADETH's last studio release. The band's farewell tour is expected to span much of 2026, giving fans worldwide the chance to bid farewell to one of metal's most important and enduring bands. The proclamation of "Megadeth Day" adds a charming, unexpected chapter to a story that has been defined by controversy, brilliance, and relentless determination since Mustaine was unceremoniously fired from METALLICA in a New York City parking lot over four decades ago.
