Ernesto Colon, former guitarist of influential New York hardcore metal band MERAUDER, has passed away. No cause of death has been announced by his family or former bandmates. The loss has sent shockwaves through the New York hardcore community, where Colon was regarded as a foundational figure whose musical contributions helped shape the sound of an entire subgenre.

MERAUDER have been a pivotal force in the New York hardcore metal scene since their formation in the Bronx in the early 1990s. The band emerged from the same fertile ground that produced legendary acts like BIOHAZARD, MADBALL, SICK OF IT ALL, and AGNOSTIC FRONT, but MERAUDER distinguished themselves by pushing further into heavy metal territory than many of their peers. Their sound blended brutal thrash metal riffs with hardcore punk's visceral intensity, creating a blueprint that countless metallic hardcore bands would follow in subsequent decades.

Colon's guitar work was central to that crushing sound. His thick, downtuned riffing drew from the heaviest corners of thrash and death metal while retaining the raw urgency of hardcore punk. This combination helped establish MERAUDER's reputation as one of the heaviest and most musically accomplished acts to emerge from the NYHC movement. Their debut album "Master Killer" (1996) remains a cornerstone of the metallic hardcore genre, and its influence can be heard in bands ranging from HATEBREED to TRAPPED UNDER ICE.

Friends, fans, and fellow musicians have shared tributes across social media, celebrating Colon's contributions to heavy music and remembering him as a kind and passionate individual offstage. The NYHC community has long been characterized by its tight bonds and fierce loyalty, and the response to Colon's passing reflects the depth of those connections. MERAUDER continue to perform and record, carrying forward the legacy that musicians like Colon helped establish.
