EXODUS's GARY HOLT on "Goliath" Songwriting: "We Write for an Audience of Five"

EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt has spoken about the songwriting process for the Bay Area thrash legends' upcoming twelfth album "Goliath," due March 20 via Napalm Records. "We write for an audience of five. We write to make ourselves happy," Holt explained, articulating the uncompromising creative philosophy that has driven EXODUS since their formation in 1979 as one of the founding acts of the Bay Area thrash metal scene -- a movement that also produced METALLICA, TESTAMENT, DEATH ANGEL, and VIO-LENCE.

The album features the return of vocalist Rob Dukes, who first joined the band for 2005's "Shovel Headed Kill Machine" and remained through 2014's "Blood In Blood Out" before departing. His predecessor Steve "Zetro" Souza and EXODUS parted ways in January 2025, and Dukes' comeback was marked by a triumphant return at the Decibel Metal & Beer Fest in Philadelphia on April 5, 2025 -- the band's first show with Dukes in eleven years. Dukes brings a more aggressive, guttural vocal style that contrasts with Souza's higher-pitched delivery, giving "Goliath" a distinctly heavier edge.

"Goliath" also features guest contributions from Peter Tagtgren of HYPOCRISY and PAIN, who lends his distinctive vocal style to one track, as well as violinist Katie Jacoby, adding an unexpected orchestral dimension to the thrash onslaught. Holt described the energy and vibe in the band as "remarkable," noting that "Goliath" contains 10 of their most diverse and anthemic songs to date. Album photos were taken by Jim Louvau and Lisa Holt, and the record marks the band's first release through Napalm Records following their signing in 2023.

The album will be supported by a massive touring schedule: dates supporting MEGADETH on the Canadian leg of their final tour, joining KREATOR on the European "Krushers Of The World" tour alongside CARCASS and NAILS starting March 20 in Lisbon, and linking up with SEPULTURA on their final North American tour. Holt's dual role as SLAYER's touring guitarist and EXODUS's creative engine makes him one of the busiest figures in thrash metal.
