British heavy metal band TAILGUNNER have released "Midnight Blitz" via Napalm Records, produced by none other than legendary JUDAS PRIEST guitarist K.K. Downing. The 10-track sophomore album delivers pure, uncut heavy metal inspired by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal tradition — the very movement that Downing himself helped define through his groundbreaking work with JUDAS PRIEST in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Downing took on the production role after being genuinely impressed by TAILGUNNER's support performances for KK'S PRIEST, his own post-JUDAS PRIEST project. The veteran guitarist recognized in these young musicians the same fire and commitment to traditional heavy metal that he brought to the genre four decades ago. His production touch brings a classic warmth and clarity to the recording, emphasizing powerful twin guitar harmonies, soaring vocals, and galloping rhythm sections.
Standout tracks include the title track "Midnight Blitz," which opens the album with a galloping charge that immediately recalls the glory days of the NWOBHM. "Tears In Rain" offers a more melodic, emotionally resonant side, while "Follow Me In Death" balances aggression with anthemic choruses. "War In Heaven" features guest keyboardist Adam Wakeman, son of YES legend Rick Wakeman, adding symphonic grandeur to TAILGUNNER's classic metal foundation.
The album represents something genuinely important for the future of traditional heavy metal. While the genre's elder statesmen — IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, SAXON — continue to deliver, the question of who carries the torch has lingered. TAILGUNNER, with Downing's blessing and guidance, are positioning themselves as credible inheritors. The album has been praised as authentic heavy metal for a new generation that honors the legacy of the greats while finding its own voice within the tradition.
