DEVIN TOWNSEND has finally pulled back the curtain on the project he has called his life's work. "The Moth" is a staggering 24-track orchestral metal opus spread across three CDs and three distinct parts, arriving May 29 via InsideOut Music. The Canadian visionary has been nurturing this concept for over a decade, and the result promises to be unlike anything in modern metal.
The album is divided into three movements. "The Moth - The Afterlife" foregrounds sweeping orchestral and choral arrangements in a theatrical framework. "The Moth - The War" captures raw energy from the project's live debut performance in the Netherlands in March 2025. The third section ties the narrative together in what Townsend describes as "a loose story following someone who realizes old patterns of behavior are no longer serving them."
The guest roster is as ambitious as the music itself. Guitar legend Steve Vai contributes alongside longtime Townsend collaborator Anneke Van Giersbergen and vocalist Lynn Wu. The core band features drummer Darby Todd, guitarist and keyboardist Mike Keneally, and bassist James Leach, all performing within vast orchestral and choral textures that were conceived from the project's inception — not added as an afterthought.
Visual art duties are shared between Travis Smith and Eliran Kantor, two of metal's most respected cover artists, reinforcing the album's grand artistic ambition. The first single, "Enter the City," is streaming now and delivers a full taste of the bombastic orchestral production that defines "The Moth."
