DIMMU BORGIR have ended their extended hiatus with a joint announcement confirming a new deal with Century Media Records and their intention to record and release a new studio album in 2027. The announcement, made Monday morning via the band's official channels, ends years of uncertainty about the future of one of symphonic black metal's most significant acts, whose last studio album "Eonian" was released in 2018 and whose subsequent silence had led many in the metal community to assume the band had effectively dissolved.

Frontman Shagrath (Stian Thoresen) addressed the silence directly in an accompanying statement: "We needed time away from the project to recover our enthusiasm and our artistic integrity. DIMMU BORGIR can only exist at its highest level, and for several years the creative conditions were not right. We are now approaching the new material with a renewed sense of purpose and, frankly, excitement that we haven't felt since the 'In Sorte Diaboli' era." Guitarist Silenoz (Sven Atle Kopperud) confirmed that the new album will feature a significantly more orchestral approach than "Eonian," returning to the dense symphonic textures of their landmark albums "Spiritual Black Dimensions" (1999) and "Death Cult Armageddon" (2003).

Century Media issued a statement expressing enthusiasm for the signing, calling DIMMU BORGIR "the most important act in symphonic black metal history." No recording timeline has been confirmed, but Shagrath indicated that initial writing sessions have been underway since the fall of 2025, with formal studio work expected to begin in the summer of 2026. A press conference will be held in Oslo on March 25 to provide further details about the upcoming album and the band's plans.
