Dave Mustaine Opens Up About Hand Pain Behind MEGADETH's Farewell Decision

In a series of interviews published during mid-March, MEGADETH frontman DAVE MUSTAINE elaborated extensively on the reasoning behind the band's farewell announcement. His primary stated concern is worsening hand pain that has progressively diminished his playing capacity — a long-running issue for the guitarist, who famously overcame throat cancer in 2019. "I don't know how much longer I can do this. My hands are really hurting," Mustaine told interviewers.

The interviews also addressed the paradox of a farewell tour projected to last three to five years, with Mustaine pushing back on skepticism: "Most bands don't get to go out on their own terms on top, and that's where I'm at in my life right now." The farewell tour, "This Was Our Life," opens April 23 in support of the band's self-titled final album, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
