PHIL CAMPBELL, the fiery Welsh guitarist who served as MOTÖRHEAD's lead axeman from 1984 until the band's dissolution following Lemmy Kilmister's death in 2015, passed away on March 13 at the age of 64. His family announced the news via social media, stating his death came "after a long and courageous battle in intensive care following a complex major operation."
Campbell was widely regarded as one of hard rock's most reliable and charismatic guitarists, forming the backbone of MOTÖRHEAD's twin-guitar assault across 13 studio albums and three decades of relentless touring. His fluid, blues-infused playing style helped define the band's sound and gave MOTÖRHEAD a live ferocity that never dimmed.
After MOTÖRHEAD ended, Campbell formed PHIL CAMPBELL and the Bastard Sons alongside his three sons, releasing two acclaimed albums and touring extensively. His 2019 solo debut Old Lions Still Roar featured guest performances from Alice Cooper, Rob Halford, and Dee Snider. He is survived by his wife Gaynor and their sons Todd, Tyla, and Dane.
