SUNN O))) have announced their tenth studio album — a self-titled record due April 3, 2026, through Sub Pop Records, marking the drone doom institution's first new material since Pyroclasts in 2019 and their debut release on the legendary Seattle indie label.
The album was produced by Brad Wood — known primarily for his work with alternative artists including Liz Phair and HUM — and recorded at Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville, Washington, in January 2025. In a stark departure from their recent practice of elaborate collaborations and guest appearances, the self-titled record features only Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley, playing every instrument themselves with no additional contributors.
The closing track "Glory Black" is available to stream now and confirms the record inhabits the same vast, sub-bass territory as the duo's finest work — heavy, meditative, immersive. The choice of Brad Wood as producer suggests a slightly warmer, more detailed sonic approach than the raw catastrophism of earlier records, though the album's essential qualities of overwhelming low-frequency density remain intact.
SUNN O))) have been central to the intersection of extreme metal, drone music, and contemporary classical composition for over two decades. Their collaborations with Scott Walker, ULVER, and Attila Csihar have expanded the conversation around what heavy music can be. The self-titled album — chosen as a title at this stage in their career — carries a deliberate sense of return to essentials.
Cover art is derived from late Mark Rothko paintings. Sub Pop will release standard and limited vinyl editions.
