DIMMU BORGIR's long-awaited return to the studio has finally materialized into Grand Serpent Rising, their first album in eight years, arriving May 22 via Nuclear Blast Records. In a new interview with KillerTube, guitarist Silenoz opened up about the band's meticulous creative process and the philosophy behind the extended gap since 2018's Eonian.
"I feel like great things shouldn't be easily achieved," Silenoz said, emphasizing that the band spent years crafting and refining the material rather than rushing output. Numerous songs were stripped down — unnecessary elements removed to sharpen the album's flow and coherence.
The record was captured in Gothenburg with renowned producer Fredrik Nordstrom, whose credits include multiple DIMMU BORGIR classics, ensuring a sound rooted in the band's identity while pushing into new creative territory. Thematically, Grand Serpent Rising dives deep into esoteric and alchemical symbolism: the serpent represents renewal, growth, knowledge, and liberation, while the album explores ego dissolution and spiritual transformation.
The full DIMMU BORGIR lineup contributed to the record — drummer Daray, bassist Victor Brandt, keyboardist Gerlioz, and guitarist Damage. Silenoz made clear that internal creative standards, not outside pressure or fan expectations, drove the album's demanding creation.
After nearly a decade of silence, DIMMU BORGIR emerge with one of black metal's most anticipated releases of 2026. Grand Serpent Rising drops May 22 on Nuclear Blast Records.
