AT THE GATES have achieved a historic milestone: "The Ghost Of A Future Dead," released April 24, 2026, via Century Media Records, has debuted at No. 1 on Sweden's official album chart — the first time in the band's 35-year career that they have topped their home country's main chart. The album also claimed the top spots on Sweden's physical, vinyl, and hard rock/metal charts.
The achievement carries profound emotional weight. "The Ghost Of A Future Dead" was conceived as a tribute to frontman Tomas Lindberg, who passed away in September 2025 after a battle with adenoid cystic carcinoma — a rare oral cancer diagnosed in December 2023. Lindberg was 52 years old.
Remarkably, Lindberg was able to record vocal demonstrations and final takes before undergoing major surgery in late 2023. Bass player Jonas Björler explained: "He did good versions or good takes in a studio in Gothenburg before the surgery."
The album was recorded and mixed by producer Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden, with artwork by Robert Samsonowitz. Its 12 tracks run to 42 minutes and 30 seconds.
When announcing the record in February, AT THE GATES said: "This album is Tomas's legacy," emphasizing that every detail — the title, the sound mix, the track order, the artwork — reflected Lindberg's own wishes and vision.
Regarding future live performances, Björler indicated nothing is confirmed yet but acknowledged the possibility of "some shows to celebrate him."
