"The Ballad Of Judas Priest" — an official documentary chronicling over 50 years of the legendary British heavy metal band's history — had its world premiere at the Hot Docs festival in Toronto on April 26, 2026. The film was co-directed by metal documentary veteran Sam Dunn and rock musician Tom Morello.

One of the film's most remarkable achievements was securing an on-camera interview with former guitarist K.K. Downing, who departed JUDAS PRIEST in 2011 after 40 years with the band. Co-director Sam Dunn acknowledged that Downing's involvement was "tricky at first attempt" due to lingering tensions between him and his former bandmates.

Dunn credited Morello's long-standing admiration for Downing as the key factor in convincing the guitarist to participate. However, unresolved legal issues between Downing and the current band required careful editorial navigation around certain topics.

Vocalist Rob Halford acknowledged the complex situation gracefully, noting that Downing's songwriting contributions remain a vital part of JUDAS PRIEST's live setlist and that mutual respect continues to exist between the parties.

The film does not feature former singer Tim "Ripper" Owens, who fronted the band from 1996 to 2003. Dunn explained that editorial constraints and running time required difficult choices about which stories to include.

"The Ballad Of Judas Priest" arrives as the band themselves continue touring extensively, celebrating five decades of shaping heavy metal history.
