The new SKINNY PUPPY album is called "Mythmaker." This is the band's second album since their reunion, the first being "The Greater Wrong of the Right," released in 2004. Let me remind you that the group definitively ceased to exist in 1996, and there was essentially no hope for the act's return — if not for one thing: a performance by Nivek Ogre and cEvin Key in 2001 in Dresden, after which a new chapter began for one of the most renowned EBM acts. Little remains of the original Darksynth elements. The hopelessness, gloom, and pessimism have sunk into oblivion along with the drug-fueled past. What do we hear on this disc? Quite dynamic and lively, though often slow electro-industrial. The vocals are overloaded with electronics — nothing new there. There are elements of techno in places; ambient surfaces here, darkwave there, breakbeat is present as well, and in one of the tracks Ogre raps. In short, the fellows are experimenting. But let's be objective — this release can hardly be compared to what the group played during their golden era, which is when many fans fell in love with them. The atmosphere of "VIVIsect VI" is gone forever. There are fragmentary hints of it, but nothing more. Overall, the release is quite melodic and diverse, and most importantly, it doesn't fit neatly into the strict confines of any single genre.
