THELEMA — On Heavenly Fields

THELEMA

On Heavenly Fields (2003)

Label: self
★★½ 5/10

What kind of music would you expect from a band whose songs are titled "December," "Sigh of Autumn," and "Decade of Rains" (all in English, of course), with a tranquil nocturnal landscape on the cover? No, it's not doom and it's not gothic — it's a sort of metal music with growling-rasping vocals (which could arguably use a bit more balance with the instruments). The musical flow alternates between picking up speed, turning into uncompromising (yet technically proficient) aggression, and slowing down to please the ear with melodies. In addition to the promised seven tracks, there's one more song (a bonus, perhaps?) in russian. In short, these Belarusian musicians clearly know how to play (as confirmed by two diverse instrumentals), but they ultimately failed to offer anything truly new or soul-stirring.
