Swedish Metal Bands Generate 8% of Sweden's Total Music Export Revenue

A new report published by Swedish Music Export (Export Music Sweden) on March 9 reveals that Swedish heavy metal bands collectively generated approximately 8% of Sweden's total music export revenue in 2025 — a remarkable figure given that metal represents a comparatively small fraction of Swedish music production. The report, which analyzes streaming data, live touring income, merchandise sales, and licensing revenue, identifies Sweden as proportionately the most metal-productive nation in the world relative to population size.

The report names GHOST, SABATON, AVATAR, ARCH ENEMY, and IN FLAMES as the top five contributors to Swedish metal export revenue, with GHOST alone accounting for approximately 2.3% of all Swedish music export income — an extraordinary figure that reflects the American band's global reach following their Grammy win and multiple arena headline tours. SABATON and IN FLAMES rank second and third respectively, with their combined touring revenue in North America alone exceeding $80 million in 2025.

The report also highlights Sweden's "metal ecosystem" — the concentration of metal musicians, producers, studios, and management infrastructure in Gothenburg and Stockholm that creates an efficient production environment for new acts. Gothenburg, in particular, is noted for its role in developing the melodic death metal genre in the early 1990s and the subsequent global spread of that sound through bands like AT THE GATES, IN FLAMES, and DARK TRANQUILLITY. Swedish Music Export director Anna Sundqvist stated that the organization is committed to supporting metal acts at all stages of their development, noting that "metal is not a niche genre in Sweden — it is part of our cultural identity."
