PARADISE LOST's GREGOR MACKINTOSH On Nearly 40 Years Together: 'Sense Of Humor' And 'Acceptance' Are Key

PARADISE LOST guitarist Gregor Mackintosh has reflected on what has kept the British doom-metal pioneers together — and largely intact — for nearly four decades. Speaking with Germany's Metal.de, Mackintosh pointed to two essentials: humor and acceptance.

"First is sense of humor. You have to have a similar sense of humor," he said. "We take the music very seriously, but we never took ourselves seriously." The guitarist credited that grounded attitude with helping the band keep industry hype in perspective across nearly forty years.

The second factor, he explained, is learning to give one another room. Bandmates have come to understand "how far you can push people, when to leave them alone, when to give people space." That wisdom, he admitted, was hard-won: "It took us a long time to figure it out. We had our ups and downs."

Mackintosh, who joined the band at 17, said that aside from his actual family, PARADISE LOST has been "the only constant" in his life. These days, when the members reconvene, the mood is relaxed — they simply catch up on each other's lives.

Vocalist Nick Holmes has offered a similar explanation in the past, attributing the band's stability to growing up together, strong chemistry and a bit of luck. "Being friends first and foremost was very important," Holmes has said.

Formed in Halifax, England in 1988, PARADISE LOST are widely regarded as founding fathers of both death-doom and gothic metal, having influenced countless bands across the extreme-metal spectrum. The group continues to tour in support of its most recent studio album, released in 2025 — its first new music in five years. With Mackintosh, Holmes and most of the classic lineup still in place, PARADISE LOST remain one of the genre's most reliable institutions.
