New Orleans sludge/doom metal outfit DOWN brought one of the most emotionally charged moments of the 2026 Sweden Rock Festival, dedicating their fan-favourite track "Lifer" to three of heavy metal's greatest losses: PANTERA's "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, his brother Vinnie Paul Abbott, and BLACK SABBATH vocalist Ozzy Osbourne.

Philip H. Anselmo, flanked by guitarists Pepper Keenan and Kirk Windstein, drummer Jimmy Bower, and bassist Pat Bruders, delivered the heartfelt dedication before launching into the crushing groove-doom of "Lifer" — a track that has carried particular emotional weight since Dimebag's murder in December 2004. The HojasLive YouTube channel captured the full performance at the festival grounds in Sölvesborg, Sweden.

The performance landed at Sweden Rock Festival 2026, one of Europe's premier heavy metal gatherings running June 3–6 and featuring an extraordinary lineup including IRON MAIDEN, TRIVIUM, VOLBEAT, HELLOWEEN, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, SAVATAGE, CANDLEMASS and dozens more. DOWN's set served as one of the festival's early highlights.

Anselmo has long been candid about the grief surrounding the losses of his former PANTERA bandmates. Dimebag was shot and killed on stage at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio on December 8, 2004. Vinnie Paul, who never fully recovered from that loss, died of heart disease in June 2018. The dedication to Ozzy Osbourne adds fresh mourning — the BLACK SABBATH frontman, one of heavy metal's most iconic and beloved figures, passed away earlier this year after decades of health battles.

DOWN are riding strong momentum in 2026: the band recently confirmed their "Strap It Down" North American headlining tour, running August 15 through September 4, with support from HELMET and SPIRIT IN THE ROOM. The band is also preparing a new studio album for release by October 2026, with guitarist Kirk Windstein confirming the recording is complete.

"Lifer" — from DOWN's 2002 album "II: A Bustle In Your Hedgerow" — remains one of the most resonant songs in their catalog, a slow-burning meditation on friendship, loyalty and endurance. In front of 40,000 festival-goers at Sölvesborg, the dedication served as a moment of collective remembrance for a metal community that has lost too many of its giants.
