MASTODON have wrapped recording on their ninth studio album — the band's first since 2021's Hushed And Grim and their first with new guitarist Nick Johnston. Drummer Brann Dailor confirmed the news in a recent interview, stating the record is complete and promising new music 'very soon.'
The album has been a profoundly difficult one to make. Co-founding guitarist and vocalist Brent Hinds — a creative cornerstone of the band for over 25 years — departed MASTODON in 2025 before his tragic death that August. Dailor also lost his mother during the recording process. That emotional weight permeates every track.
"It was a very emotional time for us," Dailor said. "I lost my mom, we went through all this turmoil with Brent, and then he passed away. It's been tough. It's all in the music, it's all in the songs. I'm excited to release it and get it out there into the world because we've been sitting on it for a while."
Canadian guitar virtuoso Nick Johnston stepped in to fill the enormous void left by Hinds. Dailor praised Johnston's approach, noting he brings his own flair while paying homage to Brent's iconic style: 'He's not trying to be Brent. There's never going to be another Brent. He was the wild, wild dude.'
The remaining core of Dailor, bassist Troy Sanders, and guitarist Bill Kelliher remains fully committed to pushing MASTODON forward. The ninth album — born out of loss, grief, and relentless dedication — is shaping up to be one of the most essential metal releases of 2026.
